Hospitals Trauma Care Performance
Monitoring and Trauma Survival Analysis

The Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) at Hope Hospital manages a database which gathers information on trauma patients from more than a hundred hospitals in England , Wales and other parts of Europe.

TARN aims to collect and analyse clinical and epidemiological data to aid the development of trauma services and enables a benchmarking to compare hospital performance. Recently a new statistical model was developed and it has shown satisfactory performance in comparison with existing models. There is however scope for developing the model further by looking at the effect of injuries in specific body regions (head, thorax, abdomen, …) on survival.

The modified injury severity score (ISS) is a predictor in the model, and it is meant to account for body regions but it seems to be overestimating the probability of survival for head injury patients (according to some clinicians). The effect of head injury or any other body region on survival can be investigated and appropriate weights can be derived for each body region.
