Key Facts on Careers for Mathematicians

A compendium of facts regarding the employment of mathematicians:

  • Over a third of mathematics graduates entering employment in 1998 went into the areas of business and finance as accountants, actuaries and business analysts.

  • In 1998 over a quarter of graduate mathematicians went on to further study (Hobsons-a guide to careers in Science, 2001).

  • Graduates in Mathematical Sciences have by far the lowest levels of unemployment, 0.5% compares to 2.2% for Modern Languages and an average of 3.4% Maths Graduates earn the highest salaries (aged up to 34) at £30,401, compared with £27,466 for Engineering (which is 2nd), and £24,234 on average (source:prospects.ac.uk).

  • Maths or computing degrees made the biggest difference to earnings, adding £222,419 for men and £227,939 for women (source: BBC News Wednesday, 1 June 2005).
