Second IMA Conference
MATHEMATICS WORKS

A conference introducing teachers to some of the areas where mathematics is used in the world of work

19th October 2007         The Royal Society, London

This one-day conference will be of particular interest to teachers of mathematics, in both schools and colleges, who seek to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the many exciting and interesting applications of mathematics. It is open to both members and non-members of the Institute.

The conference is being organised by two teachers, Chris Belsom (past ACME member - Ampleforth) and Darren Barton (Poole High School). Past speakers from industry and higher education have addressed mathematics within the sectors of information, the automotive industry, transportation and defence.

Our teacher members have chosen to address this topic because so many students question the usefulness of the mathematics they learn. This meeting, for teachers and educationalists, will give a range of examples of how school and college mathematics is used across many areas, demonstrating the ubiquitous usefulness of mathematics.

Programme

*The Millennium Dome and Arsenal’s breathtaking new Emirates Stadium are two of the country’s most talked about structures. But did you know that maths has been critical to both? Mathematician and engineer Paul Shepherd will explain how mathematics helps with roof design, spectators’ views, and even making the grass grow better. If you think geometry has no relevance to the real world, think again.

The conference will also include a brief presentation from Garrod Musto from Kingswood School, Bath , a delegate at the 2006 event and will include;
1) the impact of maths works 2006, and how that shaped the next two items.
2) "Showing You're Working" involving former students experiences; detailing how they used maths, the creation of a booklet of their experiences for use by students, also the use of a large poster of anecdotes which the students need to match to the professions of the individuals. Finally the presentations given by some of the former students during a maths week.
3) "Multiplicative Divisor" a mathematical "X Factor", which encouraged key stage 3 students to work with their parents to create a 5 minute show and tell which explores ways in which their parents use mathematics in their daily lives.

Feedback from 2006 event
“The Maths Works Conference offered an excellent opportunity for mathematics educators to begin to get to grips with some of the ways mathematics is used in the workplace.  A range of presentations from industrial, public sector and academic users of mathematics gave delegates a fascinating insight into mathematics at work.  I look forward with enthusiasm to the next conference in the series.” MEI Programme Leader (Industry).
