Interdisciplinary Workshop on Developments in Boundary Element Methods for Acoustics and Electromagnetics

University of Reading, UK

15-18 September 2004

This interdisciplinary workshop, supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, aims to connect engineers, mathematicians, and industrialists working on innovative boundary element algorithms and their application in computational acoustics and electromagnetics, and to explore the opportunities for increased collaboration in this field.

The workshop will highlight recent algorithmic developments and applications of common interest in acoustics and electromagnetics, for example fast multipole and preconditioned iterative methods, time domain scattering problems, inverse problems, hybrid and high-frequency methods, and scattering by rough surfaces.

The workshop, which will run for three full days, from lunchtime on Wednesday 15th September to lunchtime on Saturday 18 September, will comprise invited lectures, contributed talks of 20-25 minutes duration, and discussion of open problems and future directions, led by invited industrial and academic contributors.

The workshop will be held at the attractive main 300 acre Whiteknights campus of the University of Reading. Reading, the county town of the Royal County of Berkshire, is 50km West of London (22 minutes by train), with good bus and train links to Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. There are excellent opportunities for combining attendance at the conference with a vacation in the area (see, for example, http://www.chem.reading.ac.uk/town/), local attractions including London, Windsor, Henley, and Oxford.

The following have agreed to give invited talks at the workshop: Peter Bettess (University of Durham, UK), Oscar Bruno (California Institute of Technology, USA), Eric Michielssen (University of Illinois, USA), David Natroshvili (Georgian Technical University, Tbilisi), Jean-Claude Nedelec (Ecole Polytechnique, France), Roland Potthast (University of Göttingen, Germany).

The workshop forms part of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Third International Conference on Boundary Integral Methods: Theory and Applications, 14-18 September, University of Reading. Workshop participants are strongly encouraged to attend all or part of the larger conference, which starts on the morning of Tuesday 14 September and finishes at lunchtime on Saturday 18 September.

The conference will include additional invited talks from: Marc Bonnet (Ecole Polytechnique, France) Wolgang Dahmen (RWTH Aachen, Germany) Vladimir Maz'ya (Linköping University, Sweden) William McLean (University of New South Wales, Australia) David Porter (University of Reading, UK) Christoph Schwab (ETH, Zurich) Jean-Marc Vanden-Broeck (University of East Anglia, UK) Wolfgang Wendland (University of Stuttgart).

As well as the Invited Lectures, the workshop will include contributed talks of 20-25 minutes in length. A limited number of contributed papers are still being accepted by arrangement with the conference committee. Please email Simon Chandler-Wilde, University of Reading, if you would like to speak at the workshop.

For further details email: Lucy Nye, IMA Conference Officer.

Workshop Organising and Scientific Committee: Sia Amini (University of Salford), Simon Chandler-Wilde (University of Reading), Ke Chen (University of Liverpool), Penny Davies (University of Strathclyde), Ivan Graham (University of Bath), Paul Martin (Colorado School of Mines).
