Abstract

Dr Smith has provided a collision reconstruction service for solicitors and others since 1990.  This involves producing reports on specific accidents and giving evidence in court as an expert witness.  The reports are written for non-mathematicians but rely significantly on various calculations.  The talk will briefly review the role of expert witnesses.  It will then illustrate the mathematics behind: the calculations of a vehicle speed from its skid marks, collision calculations based on momentum and on the damage to the vehicles, and the calculation of a vehicle speed from the distance which a pedestrian is projected as a result of a collision.  The talk will be suitable for interested VI formers.
