What does Approval mean to Undergraduates and Graduates? Firstly, to hold an approved qualification, an individual must have graduated from an approved course listed on the Institute’s Programme Approval database and enrolled within the date ranges given. If you joined the Institute as a Student member, studying an approved degree programme, your grade of membership will automatically be upgraded to Associate Member when a copy of your certificate has been received by the Institute confirming that you have graduated from that degree programme. Applying to join the Institute with an approved degree guarantees that you will be accepted in to the Associate Member grade. Finally, and most importantly, approval for a degree programme guarantees that the educational requirements for the Chartered Mathematician (CMath) designation (subject to subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught masters degrees) are met. The Institute’s Membership Committee will then assess that you have gained appropriate postgraduate training and experience from employment. FAQs What does ‘subject to subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught masters degrees’ mean? Undergraduate masters degree programmes meet the educational requirements for the Chartered Mathematician designation. (Stand alone postgraduate Masters Degrees are not covered by Programme Approval.) A graduate with a bachelor degree will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation when they have undertaken subsequent training and experience in employment that is equivalent to a masters degree. My degree is not approved by the Institute. What does this mean? Do not worry if your degree is not approved by the Institute. If you apply to join the Institute at Associate Member grade, transfer from Student member to Associate Member grade or apply for CMath then you will need to supply a copy of your transcript with your application, which will be considered by the Institute’s Membership Committee. |
