Answers
to some frequently asked questions
1. The IMA has returned a signed copy of my CPD record. Does that mean it is acceptable for revalidating my Chartered Scientist designation?
The return of a signed copy does not imply approval for CSci revalidation. We do it to acknowledge receipt. The Professional Affairs Service Area committee (PASA) will review individual records before revalidations are due. Somebody in the Secretariat might contact you for more information if we see an opportunity to help you.
2.
Do retired members need to do CPD?
A number of retired members with CSci have asked if they need to submit
CPD records. It may seem unnecessarily bureaucratic to some retired members
but the Science Council expects everybody holding their qualification
to maintain his or her professional development.
3. Should I have a CPD return for every single month I have held the CSci designation?
The Science Council expect holders of Chartered Scientist (CSci) to maintain a CPD record. You are advised to keep a record for the whole period. However, for the purpose of renewing your Chartered Scientist designation, we are prepared to accept CPD for a minimum of the final two years before your revalidation is due. For advice, see CPD for Revalidation of Chartered Scientist.
4.
Can I chose which months to cover or do I need to stick to a calendar
year?
Neither the IMA nor the Science Council stipulate the reporting period.
You can choose the months that suit you or go by calendar year.
5.
Can you recommend some courses for me to do?
The IMA's CPD leaflet and the website page (www.ima.org.uk/Professional/cpd.htm)
give examples of activities that you can include as CPD. IMA conferences
count towards CPD. We are unable to recommend or provide lists of courses.
