IMA:Friends of Mathematics

Organisations can be nominated to be a Friend of Mathematics for a number of reasons. They may, for example employ mathematicians, or promote mathematics, or support and encourage the teaching of mathematics.

The range of organisations that are Friends shows how widely mathematics is used in business, science, engineering, biology, medicine, IT, finance, commerce and many other areas of life.

Interest in mathematics is under threat, especially among some sectors of young people. Society in general lacks an understanding of the powerful advantages mathematics offers.

We show Friends on our website to demonstrate how widely mathematics is used, to encourage young people to take up mathematics, and to increase awareness of the subject.

Organisations have been nominated to be Friends of Mathematics from July 2008. The list of Friends will increase significantly over the remainder of 2008.
