Schools and Further Education

The IMA's Schools and Further Education Committee (S&FE) work to promote mathematics education at secondary level.

The Chair of the Schools and Further Education committee is Mr Chris Belsom CMath FIMA (Formally Head of Mathematics Ampleforth College, York).

• The Royal Institution Science Short Courses

  This summer at the Ri, teachers can improve their knowledge of cosmology, how maths made the modern world or the relationship between science and religion in the Ri Science short courses.

• Maths in the Theatre: TANGENT

  Waxwing Theatre's 'Tangent', a brand new devised play exploring learning and mathematics. The play runs from 22 May - 9 June at the New Diorama Theatre in Euston, London.

• NCETM to coordinate the CPD Support Programme for Mathematics 2012-2015

• Maths Photo Competition 2012

  The Mathscareers website and the National HE STEM Programme for England and Wales Maths Photo Competition is open to school students between the ages of 11 and 19 and undergraduates who are residents of the United Kingdom.

• The Future of Statistics in our Schools and Colleges

  On 19 January 2012 the Royal Statistical Society, with support from the Actuarial Profession, published an important report by education specialist Roger Porkess.

• Solving the maths problem: international perspectives on mathematics education

  Published by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) February 2012.

• National Curriculum Review Update

  A suite of documents - setting out the evidence gathered to date by the National Curriculum review - was published by the Department for Education on 19 December 2011.

• Plus Magazine Teacher Packages

  The Plus teacher packages are designed to give teachers (and students) easy access to Plus content on a particular subject area. Most Plus articles go far beyond the explicit maths taught at school, while still being accessible to someone doing GCSE and A level maths.

• A World Class Mathematics Education for All Our Young People

  In 2009, Carol Vorderman was asked by David Cameron and Michael Gove to head a task force reviewing maths education. The report by the task force was published on Monday 8 August 2011.

• The Royal Institution of Great Britain Secondary Mathematics Masterclass Programme

  The Royal Institution coordinates a UK-wide network of mathematics masterclasses and related enrichment activities.

• Evaluating Mathematics Pathways: Final Report

  The final report of the Evaluating Mathematics Pathways project.

• Launch of the ACME Mathematical Needs project

  ACME has published the final reports of its Mathematical Needs project.
