IMA Conference on Nonlinearity and Coherent Structures

Date: Wednesday 6 July – Friday 8 July 2011
Location: Agricultural Building, University of Reading

Programme

Aims and Scope

Nonlinear phenomena are ubiquitous in the natural world. Very often the nonlinearity coexists with a degree of order, and the associated coherent structures offer a solid reference point for theory and experiments. A noteworthy example are the so-called solitons, localised waves propagating nonlinearly and yet displaying many features of linearity. The theoretical developments in the field of nonlinear evolution phenomena and the mathematical study of coherent structures are relevant to many disparate fields, including nonlinear optics, random media, atmosphere and ocean dynamics, general relativity, high-energy particle physics, plasma physics, fluid and solid mechanics, Bose-Einstein condensation, nonlinear electrical circuits, and reaction-diffusion processes.

The aim of this meeting is to bring together researchers on the theoretical aspects of these problems with researchers in the many fields of potential application, to discuss recent developments, methodologies and results, and to encourage communication and collaboration. The conference programme will include presentations on both the mathematical theory, computational findings, and concrete applications. We plan to have a limited number of speakers, in order to avoid parallel sessions and foster as much as possible communication across the different communities.

The conference proceedings will be peer-reviewed and published as a special issue of the IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics.

Organising Committee

Delegate Information

Lectures

The conference takes place in the Agriculture Building in the Nike Theatre. Please see the programme for the times of the talks.

Presentations

If you are presenting a talk, you will need to ensure that you have uploaded your presentation to the computer in the break before your talk. Lizzi Lake or Russell Wallace at the registration desk will be happy to assist you with this.

Lunch/tea and coffee breaks

Lunches and refreshments will take place in room GU04 in the Agriculture Building. For those with dietary requirements, Lizzi Lake or Russell Wallace will be able to advise.

Conference Dinner

The Conference Dinner will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 6 July at Wantage Hall, labelled and located on A2 on the map. This is approximately a 5 – 10 minute walk from the Park Reception/accommodation area of campus. If you are walking from the Agriculture Building, please allow 25 – 30 minutes.

Drinks Reception

There will be a drinks reception for all delegates at 6:45pm on Thursday 7 July at Park House (labelled “Eat and Drink at Park House” on the map. Please note that this separate to Park Eat and Park Reception which are on a different part of campus).

Accommodation

The following information on accommodation is for those who have booked accommodation for this conference through the IMA.

You will be able to check in and collect your room key from Park Reception, located on the ground floor of Windsor Hall. Keys are available from 2pm and reception is normally manned until 11pm. All delegates should vacate rooms by 9am on the day of departure.

Bedding, towels and toiletries will be provided. All bedrooms have access to the internet via ethernet cable, which is provided.

Breakfast for those with accommodation will be available in the “eat” restaurant located by Park Group Reception from 7:30am – 9am. In order to claim your breakfast, please either present your badge, or quote “IMA Conference”.

Delegates who have booked accommodation with us are advised to allow 20 minutes to reach the Agriculture Building, where the conference will take place, by foot.

Delegates are requested to note that there is no luggage storage facility at Park Group. Secure areas can be pre-arranged with the University of Reading if available and you will incur an agreed cost.

Smoking

The University operates a strict no smoking policy in all academic buildings and halls of residence, and all areas within 10 metres of any building on campus unless passing on a recognised pathway.
