Continuum models - helping to guide industry

Colin Please (University of Southampton, UK)

Applied mathematics provides a wide variety of different industrial sectors with the tools to guide their research and development. Many of these mathematical tools are now encoded with standard application software. In this talk we shall explore the role of the applied mathematical modeller in enabling novel industrial problem to be put into a theoretical framework in which insight can be gained and the problem understood. Close interaction with the industrial problem not only focuses the direction, detail of the mathematical models that are produced but also ensures that the ideas that are generated then modify the thinking within the industry.

Case studies from industries as diverse as wine growing, battery manufacture, food processing and microchip production will be used to demonstrate the ways that modelling can progress. Open questions raised by the problems will be presented and insights gained revealed.
