Computational and numerical methods for the efficient and accurate solution of the bidomain equations
J. P. Whiteley (Computational Biology Group, Computing Laboratory, University of Oxford, UK)
Cardiac electrophysiology is usually modelled using the bidomain equations. The numerical solution of the bidomain equations on a computational domain representing a mammallian heart is a significant computational challenge. In this talk we discuss the application of both theoretical and practical techniques that may increase the computational efficiency of the numerical solver by over two orders of magnitude with negligible loss of accuracy. The results presented have been obtained using a desktop PC. However, the algorithm has been designed with distributed memory parallel computers in mind and it is expected that this algorithm will also perform well on these architectures.
