About Us

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, for the public good.

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is also the professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians.

Founded in 1964, the Institute now has over 5000 members. Ten percent of members live outside the United Kingdom. Forty percent of members are employed in education (schools through to universities), and the other 60% work in commercial and governmental organisations.

In 1990 the Institute was incorporated by Royal Charter and was subsequently granted the right to award chartered mathematician status.

At the AGM on 27 June 2007 it was agreed that the AGM shall empower Council to negotiate with the Privy Council to amend the Charter and Byelaws so that:

i)          A register of Chartered Mathematics Teachers shall be established by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), to be operated together with or without other mathematics societies to award the designation of Chartered Mathematics Teacher to applicants who are suitably qualified. The post-nominals for this designation will be CMathTeach.

The Institute shall constitute a Registration Authority with or without other organisations which shall create and maintain and administer the Chartered Mathematics Teacher Register and shall prepare and publish and review such procedures and codes and rules as may be required.

ii)         To grant the power to the IMA to admit to the register of Chartered Mathematicians members of mathematics societies in addition to members of the IMA.

iii)         To amend the voting procedures so that five Councillors are elected each year.

iv)        To make other minor adjustments that are, in the opinion of Council, necessary to bring terminology up to date and for the Charter to be in good order.

Council will display on the IMA website the final text of the changes to be made to the Charter before they are delivered to the Privy Council.

Amended Royal Charter 3 December 2007
