The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, for the public good.
The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is also the professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians.
Founded in 1964, the Institute now has over 5000 members. Ten percent of members live outside the United Kingdom. Forty percent of members are employed in education (schools through to universities), and the other 60% work in commercial and governmental organisations.
In 1990 the Institute was incorporated by Royal Charter and was subsequently granted the right to award chartered mathematician status. On the 5 November 2008 Privy Council granted the right to amend the Charter and Byelaws so that a register of Chartered Mathematics Teachers shall be established by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, to be operated together with or without other mathematics societies to award the designation of Chartered Mathematics Teacher to applicants who are suitably qualified.

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is located in Catherine Richards House, 16 Nelson Street, Southend on Sea, Essex, SS1 1EF.
It is in a conservation area close to the main shopping precinct, railway stations to London Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street and the seafront.
