IMA Distinguished Lecturer Programme

The Institute's Distinguished Lecturer Programme supports visits to the United Kingdom and Ireland of eminent mathematicians from other countries. The aim is to provide opportunities for a wide range of mathematicians to meet and become better acquainted with the work of the visiting lecturer.

The arrangements

  • the lecturer will speak at a major conference and preferably at two other locations;
  • all lectures will be publicised in Mathematics Today and we hope will be open to Institute members without charge;

Procedure

If you wish to propose a candidate for the IMA Distinguished Lecturer programme, please send a fully-costed proposal to David Youdan, Executive Director at the IMA. The proposer will be responsible for organising the entire visit and liaison with the distinguished lecturer.

Individual proposers may act in their own capacity or as representatives of committees or groups. You may submit proposals at any time but the earlier they are before the proposed tour, the better. Applications will be considered by the co-ordinators of the Small Grants Scheme who will allocate funds from within their annual budget. The Institute has only limited funds available and this will restrict the number of distinguished lecturers we can support in any one year.

Conditions

  • all prior publicity and the introduction of the lecturer will use the terminology 'IMA Distinguished Lecturer';
  • the lecturer will be encouraged to write an article for Mathematics Today at a level appropriate for the readership;
  • a report should be produced at the end of the visit commenting on the outcome and the numbers attending each lecture;
  • the Institute will refund the expenses for the visit on receipt of a claim form accompanied by documentation and receipts.
