Learned SocietyThe Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is the professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians. The Institute has an international membership, and is active in a wide range of areas both directly and indirectly pertaining to the study and application of mathematics. A Special Interest Group is a set of people with an interest in a particular area of mathematics. At present there are two active groups, both of which produce newsletters, and two newer groups being created. The IMA Lighthill Lecture, in memory of Sir James Lighthill, founder President of the Institute, will be given each year at the British Applied Mathematics Colloquium (BAMC). The purpose of the Institute Small Grant Scheme is to facilitate research activity in all areas of applicable mathematics. The Scheme is designed to be flexible, to have a simple application procedure, and to offer a rapid response to applications. It is open to all members of the wider mathematics community. Distinguished Lecturer Programme The Institute's Distinguished Lecturer Programme supports visits to the United Kingdom and Ireland of eminent mathematicians from other countries. The aim is to provide opportunities for a wide range of mathematicians to meet and become better acquainted with the work of the visiting lecturer. The IMA research group promotes the needs of mathematics and applied mathematics research. The Committee works with funders and users of mathematics research. The activities include meetings with key stakeholders such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Department for Education and Skills, the Research Council (UK), the Department of Trade and Industry and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). |
