Research

The IMA research group promotes the needs of mathematics and applied mathematics research.  The Committee works with funders and users of mathematics research.  The activities include meetings with key stakeholders such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Department for Education and Skills, the Research Council (UK), the Department of Trade and Industry and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).  At present many of the activities are focused on England, however the Institute will expand these activities to cover the whole of the United Kingdom.  In addition the Research Group advises, through consultations, in many areas of policy.  For example, the Research Group nominates candidates for the Research Assessment Exercise applied mathematics panel, the EPSRC Special Advisory Team (mathematics) and the EPSRC College.

Where possible, the Institute works within the Council for the Mathematical Sciences (the IMA, the London Mathematical Society and the Royal Statistical Society) to provide a unified view.

The members of the Research Group are:

Prof. David Abrahams
Prof. Chris Budd
Prof. Iain Duff (Chair)
Prof. Alistair Fitt
Prof. Peter Grindrod
Prof. Oliver Jensen
Prof. John McWhirter
Prof. Alexander Movchan
Prof. Nigel Peake
Prof. Tim Pedley

Membership of the Research Group is confirmed by the Council each year.
