"HOW IS MATHEMATICS USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SECOND RUNWAY AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT."

Without the ability to perform difficult mathematical calculations I would not be able to do my job. My role directly involves the placing of concrete for the new runway at Manchester airport, the correct volume must therefore be ordered and set up at the correct level and in the correct position.

To be able to do this, the concrete levels need to be calculated taking into account differing crossfalls and offset positions. This can prove to be rather complicated so a thorough understanding of the job is required. In addition, concrete volumes need to be calculated for the length, width and differing thickness of the slab is poured. It is very important that these calculations are correct because if too much or too little concrete is ordered or it is placed in the wrong place, it can prove to be a waste of time and money.

Maths is important because we use it to calculate the quantity of material required to be removed/placed, which gives us an idea of costs, the duration of the projects and the amount of labour and machinery needed to complete the job.

In conclusion, mathematics is an essential aspect of my everyday life and I recommend anyone to obtain a high degree of understanding in this extremely important and valuable subject.
