"EVERY BIT OF THIS OPERATION FROM
BEGINNING TO END INVOLVES MATHS."

As a machine operator and packer on the factory floor in the Manufacturing department, my job entails filling and packing products on a conveyor belt. Every bit of this operation from beginning to end involves maths. We work in teams therefore the correct number of people are needed in each team as our efficiencies are worked out as prices per hour per person, for example, if the team were short of people it would mean taking longer to do the work and therefore increase the cost. This cost would then be passed on to the customer making us less competitive.

One of the first jobs a new member to the packaging room does is put products into a packer at the end of the conveyor. The amount going into each packer varies from product to product. It is most important that the number stated on an order is correct when being sent to distributors. The result of not having enough items in a packer could mean a customer not getting their order, resulting in the possibility we lose their custom and if this repeatedly happened, we could go out of business.

These are just a few examples of why maths is important in our working day.
